02. FREE WEBSITE PROMOTION? WELL WHY NOT?

Is it possible to promote your website completely for free?

Of course you can! These days, your new website can gradually attract large amounts of huge traffic and its all down to the many free methods of website promotion. So exactly how does free website promotion work? Let's take a look at some of the more popular free methods available to webmasters and owners alike.

First of all, look for the most popular internet directories and enlist your site with them. This is one of the most effective free website promotion tactic and relatively easy to do. By starting with this step, the rest will follow on.

Whatever you do, remember to prepare your website and make sure it’s looking as good as you can make it for a better chance to get accepted in the directories of your choice.

Secondly, spend some time and get to know your online forums. One of the reasons forums are created is to enable their members to enjoy free website promotion amongst themselves. Simply sign-up and then log in and introduce yourself. This is the most important first step to being accepted by the members of the forum as they often form tight knit communities which frown upon new members coming straight in and posting what amounts to ads for their affiliate products without at least saying hello! In any case, posting any links in your posts is normally not allowed in the better forums, so read the rules of the forum before you get started. Start slowly by posting in a few established threads if you have something valid to say. Avoid posting irrelevant one liners such as "Good point", "I agree with you" etc. Make your posts as interesting as possible and always relevant to the thread. Then when the members start to get to know you, post pertinent questions if you genuinely have some and the members will be happy to help you if they can.

You may be wondering why bother to go to all this trouble. Why not just spam a load of posts with your affiliate links in? Well, you want to increase your exposure and your credibility so you can use the forums as a long term source of traffic. Posting a load of links will only get your posts deleted by the moderators and eventually, if you continue to do it, get you banned from the forum altogether. Then you lose all the traffic you could of had.

A third method of free traffic is to write a press release. Use your writing skills and create a press release that advertises your website. This is another free promotion tactic for your website that you can do whenever you have time. Write a few brief paragraphs, then email it to your friends and to your colleagues. You can also send it to internet e-zines, newspapers and other online media to generate massive traffic that will come to you often.

An often forgotten method of free website promotion is simply being friendly to other webmasters and bloggers online.

Why?

Well, for one, they'll be more inclined to set up reciprocal links with their sites. Network and establish contacts wherever you can because you can never have too few link requests and exchanges.

By writing articles you can also generate traffic to your website for free and with little effort. For example, let's assume your website is promoting a travel agency. Write some articles about the all the great things about travelling or the hottest travel spots around the globe. In the final, concluding paragraph, be sure to mention your website. This type of article works as "advertorials" and also doubles as free website promotion.

An often overlooked method of free website promotion is good old fashioned word of mouth. Casually throw your website and what it's all about into daily conversations with friends and colleagues and let the news spread!

Making a banner ad specifically for your website and then approaching another website owner to display it on his site in exchange for displaying one of his banners on yours is an excellent way of increasing traffic for free.

When you create your own website, you needn't pay a solitary cent in order to promote it effectively. By using some of the free methods outlined in this article you can create an effective advertising machine that will drive lots of traffic to your site over time and that traffic will continue to build as the snowball effect starts to get going.
